Chris Boulden
Designer Illustrator

Based in London, I work independently on all manner of projects with a focus on branding and visual communication in the cultural and humanities sector.
In 2026 I have worked as a designer for 27 years, independently since 2003. I have also enjoyed putting my mind to creative and art historical writing, cell animation and web design. I work practically, figuring a project’s anatomy out with graphite, illustrating with ink on paper and screen, and explore the bounds of typography – from brand identity to book design, technical layout and editing.

In addition to my design practice, I paint depictions and observations of the natural world. Feel free to see a few examples of my art at chrisboulden.com

Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden

Catalogue design
Paul Holberton Publishing
2023

The Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden (SKD) collaborated with the Katrin Bellinger Collection, producing a show rich with examples of artists travelling and interacting across cultural and geographic borders.
I had the pleasure to work with curators Anita Sganzerla (Katrin Bellinger Collection) and Stephanie Buck (SKD) on this exhibition catalogue.

The book design supports both essays and entries with a strong typographic grid and controlled, detail oriented typography. A sense of aesthetic clarity is always important for a book project like this, the trick is to keep it interesting and allow the essays to stay expressive and the catalogue to flow as seamlessly as possible.
